Dramatic Rendition of the God of War

Obverse: The likeness of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II located on the obverse was created in 1998 by British sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. The Temple of Mars Ultor (Mars the Avenger) is depicted below, a structure commissioned by Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire. The background features a concentric design ornamented with an array of filigree and textures, along with the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “NIUE,” “2 DOLLARS,” “2021,” “AG 999” and “ROMAN GODS.”

Reverse: The reverse features Mars in a triumphant pose, armed with a sword and preparing to slay the enemy at his feet. The god is surrounded by skeletons in Roman gladiator regalia, and traditional Roman art objects that include the bust of a woman on a pedestal and a collection of amphorae (ancient storage jars). Inscribed “MARS” on a plaque above, beneath the image of a heraldic eagle.
