The story of Daedalus and Icarus from Greek Mythology is one of the most famous tales of ancient folklore — it’s even been used as the basis for a Heavy Metal song by the British band Iron Maiden in its 1983 rocker “Flight of Icarus.” Now the story of the father-and-son duo escaping from imprisonment thanks to wings made from wax and feathers has been retold on this fantastic coin that’s ready to take flight in your collection!

A Poignant Tale From Greek Mythology

The first thing you’ll notice about this stunning coin when you hold it in your hands is the incredible High Relief design. It shows the familiar story in poignant detail as Daedalus, the master inventor, soars through the sky while his son, Icarus, plummets to his death, his wings melting after flying too close to the sun. The coin’s obverse adds further detail to the story as it shows the maze that Daedalus constructed for King Minos of Crete to trap the half-man, half-bull Minotaur. Mino later imprisoned Daedalus because he assisted Theseus, the enemy of Minos, in his efforts to survive the Labyrinth and defeat the Minotaur. The moral of the story was that one should not get too greedy or too arrogant, as Icarus had been, by not listening to Daedalus and disobeying his father’s orders not to fly so close to the sun.
