2024 Germania Goddesses Nerthus 2 oz Silver Colorized Cast Bar

Gullweig – the goddess of wealth, which she herself symbolised, beautiful and shining. Being “living gold”, she aroused people’s desire and thirst for wealth. For this reason, attempts were made to burn her three times, after which, like eternal, indestructible gold, she was reborn even more beautiful and radiant (this refers to the alchemical process of hardening bullion). Over time, she became the epitome of demoralising desire and evil female magic.

2024 Germania Goddesses Nerthus 2 oz Silver Colorized Cast Bar

The 6th bar in the Germania Goddesses Series

Nerthus is a pre-Christian goddess of fertility and the Earth Mother worshipped by Germanic peoples in Scandinavia, Denmark, and Old England:

Associated with peace and prosperity, Nerthus was believed to visit human villages to restore calm and prevent violence.  Her worship centered on a temple in a sacred grove on an island in the Baltic Sea.  Her rituals included a cart procession from her temple, where a priest would lead the cart out of the grove when Nerthus was needed. When she returned, the cart and Nerthus were washed in a lake by enslaved people, who were then drowned.

Her name may be connected with the Vanir deities, and some theories suggest that she and Njord formed a divine pair.

The Roman historian Tacitus reported that Nerthus was worshiped by seven tribes, including the Angles. Tacitus’s account may have come from earlier works, his own experiences, or from merchants, soldiers, or others who spent time in the region.
